Today, Google and the Israeli Antiquities Authority / Israel Museum officially launched the Digital Dead Sea Scrolls site. This is a watershed in DSS studies. By making these hi-res (If you’re thinking like 20-50 megapixels, think again. Try a whopping 1200 megapixels. Whoa…!) multi-spectrum images freely available to the public online for the first time ever.

With the launch of this site I believe that DSS studies will take off like a parabola curve. This site is making available to both scholars and laymen alike what has previously never been accessible to more then a select few specialists. It’s been over 60 years since their discovery and they are finally making their way to the public arena. I’m sure Hershel Shanks is dancing a jig right about now.

Right now they are offering 5 of the most important (and complete) scrolls, but I’m sure more will follow. Currently available is: The Great Isaiah Scroll, the War Scroll, The Temple Scroll, The Commentary on Habakkuk Scroll and the Community Rule Scroll. They even have English translations of the text as you scroll over the different sections. You can zoom in incredibly close and see the fine details of the text and the scroll. It is quite impressive. Be sure to check it out!Similar Posts:

From the FFOZ blog, they state:

This presentation is sub-titled “…from a critical perspective” as the introductory content places heavy emphasis on the role of Christian theology in the formation of the cultural climate that allowed for the Holocaust to happen.

I encourage anyone who can to join this event and promote it on your blog, Facebook, etc. Let’s get to word out and “stand in the gap” for the people of God. Here is some brief info regarding the seminar invitation and speakers, directly from the FFOZ announcement:

Webinar Invitation

Join us for this informative free webinar. Invite your friends, pastors, and/or host an evening for people to view this powerful presentation together. Professionally presented information with over 250 PowerPoint slides containing images (some graphic), stats, charts, maps, etc. You will be greatly informed and educated in this critical historical event. Once registered an e-mail notice will be sent giving you the login and call in information.

Webinar Presenters

Instructor: Daniel Hennessy

Special Guest: Dr. Michael Schiffman of Chevra

Host: First Fruits of Zion

Daniel Hennessy

Hennessy is a Holocaust educator trained at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and was awarded the Meyer A. Nathan Scholarship for teaching the Holocaust by the national office of the Anti-Defamation League. He’s also been trained by visiting staff from the Yad Vashem Int’l School of Holocaust Studies located in Jerusalem, Israel.

Chevra (Dr. Michael Schiffman)

Chevra has been operating since the fall of the USSR. Elderly Jews, mostly holocaust survivors, are living below the poverty level and do not know if they will have food for the next day. Chevra provides food parcels, and soup kitchens, and funds for medicine to them. Chevra also operates throughout Israel providing for the hurting and needy. With the aging population of holocaust survivors, this may be the last opportunity we have to help them. People who endured such horrible things should not finish their lives in starvation and poverty. (There will be an opportunity for you to give into this important work).

If you would like to see more texts available freely online that related to Messianic studies, please consider helping me out. I’m looking for a volunteer to help develop my textual repository site DWD eTexts. I currently have posted all of Pirkei Avot (in both Hebrew and English, with a bit of commentary), Odes of Solomon, the Didache, and have begun adding 1 Clement.

You don’t have to be a web developer. You just need to be a little computer savvy. Essentially, you would just be logging into the site and copying/pasting in text. There would be a little formatting required, but not much. If anyone would like to help me add more texts (and finish 1 Clement) to this site, please post a comment on this post.Similar Posts:
